As hospitals reorganize to care for more patients more efficiently, Paul DellaRocco and other health care management experts work to find ways to improve patient flow to ensure a smooth and effective experience. Patient flow, as Paul DellaRocco knows, is key for good hospital health. There are two points in particular where hospitals can make small changes that can yield big, positive differences.

Predict patient flow: If emergency rooms see peak patient levels during certain times of the day, making sure that related services are ready in anticipation of the influx can move patients quickly with top-quality care.

Take steps for future care earlier: Planning a patient’s discharge process soon after admission not only helps to eliminate end of treatment issues, but helps reduce the chances of readmission.

By eliminating or combining steps, hospitals can provide even better care to their patients.

Paul DellaRocco is CEO and president of The Haelen Group, a Boston-based healthcare management company. He has managed a variety of facilities, including nursing homes and clinics.
